Unique and Specialty Ordinances

The City of Nichols Hills has several unique and specialty ordinances that help regulate the quality of life in Nichols Hills. These ordinances may be unique to Nichols Hills or may have been enacted to resolve a specific problem or issue.

PARKING. No person shall park a vehicle on the street in the City of Nichols Hills between the hours of 2:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. any day of the week. All vehicles must be parked on a permanently paved hard surface or driveway. If a vehicle is cited three or more times and the owner or operator of the vehicle has not contacted the Nichols Hills Court Clerk’s office within five working days concerning those citations the vehicle may be impounded by the police department. The owner or responsible party would be responsible for all related expenses.

PARKING OF COMMERCIAL AND RECREATIONAL VEHICLES.  It is unlawful to park any commercial vehicle, recreational vehicle, trailer, taxi cab or mobile home or any vehicle of any kind except a private passenger vehicle on private property, between the hours of 2:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m., unless it is parked on a permanently hard surface or driveway completely behind the front wall of the main building located on the property, and unless such vehicle shall be screened from view from the main and any side street upon which the property abuts.  Provided, however, that pickup trucks having no sign, logo or marking, other than by commercial licensing and the words “Commercial Vehicle” in letters not exceeding 2 ½ inches by 2 ½ inches on the rear bumper, and no visible load or cargo shall be exempt from the screening requirements only of this subsection.

GARAGE SALES.  An application and permit is required for all garage/estate sales and may be obtained at City Hall.  Garage sales are limited to one per address every six months for two consecutive days.  Only one yard sign is allowed and it can only be placed on the applicant’s property and must be at least 10’ from the street curb. Signs may only be displayed on the day(s) of the sale.

CURFEW FOR MINORS (Persons under the age of 18). It is unlawful for any minor to remain, idle, loiter, wander, stroll or play in any public place, or to drive, park or be a passenger in any motorized vehicle in any public place between the hours 10:00p.m. and 6:00a.m. weekdays and 12:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays, unless accompanied by their parent or guardian. PETS. All dogs and cats are required to be annually licensed by the City. Proof of rabies vaccination is required.  Dogs, licensed or unlicensed, are not allowed to run at large within the City. Call the Police Department at 843-5672 for more information.
 
PORTABLE STORAGE BUILDINGS used for the storage of furniture, tools, clothes, parts, materials, or supplies of any type or description shall be located a minimum of 25 feet from the street and shall require a permit issued by the office of the City Clerk. Permits shall be valid for 7 days after which time the building or container must be removed from the property. No more than 2 permits shall be issued in a 12 month period.

MOWING it shall be unlawful for any contractor person or company to engage in the business or activity of mowing yards or parcels of land within the City on Sundays or an official holiday. This shall not apply to the owner or occupant or to a member of the owner or occupants family mowing of the owner’s or occupant’s yard or parcel of land.
