Fire Prevention

Much of our public education work takes place during fire prevention week. Fire prevention week is the week of October 8th. In Chicago on October 8, 1871, Mrs. O'Leary's cow kicked over a lantern in her barn and started a fire that burned for two days and destroyed a large part of the city. It came to be known as the great Chicago fire. Large fires such as this and the hundreds of people that were being killed in fires each year demonstrated a need for fire prevention through public education.

At NHFD we visit the schools during fire prevention week and conduct age appropriate programs to educate children in all aspects of fire prevention. We also interject fire prevention ideas to kids during tours of the fire station.

When requested, we also meet with citizen groups throughout the year and talk about fire and home safety.
