Public Programs
R-U-OK PROGRAM:
The “R-U-OK” program was developed to focus police concern for those residents of the community who are elderly or handicapped and living alone. The department became aware that an increasing number of our residents fall into this category. In many instances, these individuals do not have close relatives living nearby to look after their welfare. Our response was to attempt to identify those persons who should be included in a welfare surveillance program. Once identified, and with their voluntary approval, they are placed on a list maintained by the police and fire departments. A group of volunteers routinely call the residents on the list to check their welfare and determine if special assistance is needed. Application form Below. (Requires Adobe Acrobat) HOUSE CHECK & EXTRA WATCH:
“House Check” is a program that encourages residents to notify the police department when ever they are going to be away from their homes, whether for an extended period or for a few days. Upon being notified, the police department will make periodic checks of the resident’s house while they are away. “Extra Watch” is a similar program, but deals with special problems, temporary in nature, such as a family member home alone or other safety or security related concerns. Under this program, officers are alerted to the concern so they can react more responsively and make more frequent passes by homes or businesses placed on the “Extra Watch” list. SPECIAL TRAFFIC OPERATIONS PROGRAMS (S.T.O.P.):
S.T.O.P. programs are initiated to respond to specific traffic problems within the city. When a resident calls concerning speeding motorists or other traffic problems, the Patrol division assigns officers to focus special attention to the problem area. This may include unmarked surveillance, radar surveillance and visual observation to monitor the number and average speed of vehicles passing through the area. In the absence of specific complaints, the Patrol Division randomly assigns locations for the officers to initiate S.T.O.P. activity. To request a STOP Program complete the request form online. NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH:
“Neighborhood Watch” is an organized volunteer activity actively supported by the police department. When requested, representatives from the police, fire, public works and city administrative departments meet with small neighborhood groups to discuss personal safety, home security, fire prevention and various city related issues. An active neighborhood watch program is the cornerstone of the community’s crime prevention partnership with police.
